A woman walking into the woods.

You most likely have heard of the chakra system- while it is an ancient system, it has become more widely understood within modern approaches to personal development, healing and spirituality.  This ancient system, accounts for the body's metaphysical energy centers- not physically seen, but located at specific centers within the body, that hold themes to support us in how we move and show up within our lives.

Bringing our awareness to each individual energy center, can have powerful healing & self discovery benefits, as you begin on your spiritual journey.

The root chakra is the foundation of our energetic system. If you were to imagine your soul as a home being built, the root chakra would be the foundation of that home.  The root chakra holds immense power, storing our earliest experiences, foundational beliefs formed in childhood, and even past life energies. This is why I personally believe the root chakra is one of the most essential energy centers in understanding and healing past timelines within yourself.

Past experiences can leave unconscious wounds and limiting mindsets that hold us hostage in repeating past patterns, that are actually not applicable to our present day, but because we have not yet done our healing work around these wounds, the show up, often LOUD, impacting our present adult life.

The good news? We can intentionally heal this- and replace a rocky foundation rooted in the same outdated cycles with a solid sense of how our past wounds, can be our greatest foundation for strength and understanding our true power. By consciously working with our root chakra, we can break free from the grip of the past and step into a life filled with stability, security, and a deep sense of belonging- regardless of less than ideal childhood circumstances.

Common signs you have an imbalance root chakra

The first thing we need to remember when we talk about our own energy system, is that they are in constant flow and ever changing.  What we call an “Imbalance” in the healing practitioner space- is when one center in particular is either in overdrive (doing way too much) or under-functioning (not supporting you according to the specific chakra's design).  Similar to an organ within the body- if you had one organ that was doing too much work, or not enough- that would be critical for allowing the rest of the body to successfully function.

While we all have seasons within our lives, some more difficult than others, carrying different themes and lessons, it is important that our default state is not “out of balance” for an extended period of time.   In that same note- it is not a death sentence to have an imbalance, as long as you are aware and intentional- you (yes you!) are your greatest healer- you can restore balance with dedication to self awareness and willingness to dive into your own shadows.

The theme with the root chakra is all about safety- both physical and perceived psychological safety.  If you resonate with the below, these are some common signs of a blocked root chakra:

  • Extreme sense of lack- no matter what your actual reality, there is a constant feeling what you have will not be enough- finances, relationship, home, career- it constantly feels like there is a carrot at the end of the stick, your sense of security is always just slightly out of reach.

  • Perception that you will not be able to literally survive, general sense of fear or default to worst case scenario.

  • Repeating old timelines-You experience repeat cycles within your life.  You end one toxic relationship/ job, and notice the same repeat dynamics presenting in your new relationship or career.

  • Ruminating on past situations & trouble releasing pains or stories from your past- not just once in a while- living there. You may notice you are overly focused in worry of the future, or ruminating on the past, what you could or should have done- never quite in the current moment.

  • Hyper-vigilance & assuming worst case scenario- always trying to stay two steps ahead of a situation to protect yourself from harm, discomfort or trouble.

  • Disconnection from your physical body- Weight loss/gain, lower body aches or injuries, dependence on drugs or truly anything outside of yourself, to numb from your emotions or reality. General feeling that you are not in control of your physical body.

  • Keeping yourself excessively busy, back to back meetings, activities- little time or opportunity to process emotions or tap into your emotional world and physical state of being. This mindset of grind culture, that to be "busy" equates to your value- often time keeps us removed from our inner truth.

So...If any of this is resonating, don't worry you can intentionally heal!

Healing the root chakra- is all about maintaining a sense of safety and security, typically rooted in timelines that are no longer relevant for protection.  For example, growing up in an unpredictable household as a child, anticipating the next “move” of your caregivers may have protected you from some type of physical or emotional abuse or discomfort.  But as a 30 something adult- you notice you are defaulting to this state in other areas of your life, when you perceive discomfort coming.  This is where we want to ensure our past timelines do not hijack our present and future potentials.

The Root of the Issue: Childhood Programming and Past Timelines

But what happens when these experiences are negative, or when we haven't had the chance to process them fully? Unhealed wounds and limiting beliefs can become lodged in the root chakra, impacting our present reality in ways we may not even realize. We might struggle with feelings of insecurity, anxiety, or a constant sense of disconnection, or the need to numb or escape from our current day reality. The healing power lies in addressing the past. No time traveling needed- we just need to intentionally surface the root of the trauma in a safe space.

Time to heal it…Empowerment Through Awareness: Lean into the fear

Root chakra healing techniques-The key to restoring balance to the root chakra lies in awareness & taking back your story. By taking a deep dive into our inner self discovery, we can identify those unconscious patterns and limiting beliefs that hold us back.

Here's a powerful journaling prompt to get you started:

-What outdated programs are currently running, that do not serve me. Where did I learn this program? Note how/why this program was helpful, and why it is no longer needed.

-If you have awareness around a story of your past that still plays in your mind to this day, keeping you rooted in fear or worry. Ask yourself- what was this event meant to teach me? How can I use it for my highest good, rather than stuck in victimhood. If I was the heroine (or hero) of my own story, how would use this event to accelerate me to my highest path?

-Has there ever been a time in my life when my basic needs of food, water, warmth, rest, security, and safety weren’t met? How did I feel during this time? Has this same feeling occurred in my adult life.

-Describe your relationship with your physical body. Detail any routines established to ground yourself within your body. Note any “numbers” (Drugs, comfort foods, alcohol, habits) that disconnect you from your body/emotions.

-Detail the first experience that comes to mind, a time when you felt your survival was at stake (this could be a literal threat to your survival or perceived at the time, acceptance/ emotional safety). As you feel into the root chakra, are there any timeline parallels, where that same emotions has come up within my present day life?

As you work with these prompts, allow yourself to explore your childhood experiences- even ones that seem small or insignificant. What messages did you receive about yourself and the world?  Were there situations that made you feel in order to be safe you needed to show up or protect yourself in a certain way? Make sure that you continue to zoom out, and be clear about how the past timeline- no matter how much you may have replicated the old patterns, dynamics, relationships-is not your present reality because you have a choice to make a different choice.

Releasing the Past and Reclaiming Your Power

Once you've identified these patterns, it's time to begin the healing process:

New to all this, start with a simple guided meditation for healing the root chakra.  This can be passive and even subconscious work. Pick one to play on youtube, linked is my personal favorite root chaka meditation, and allow yourself to bring awareness to this physical space (the root chakra sits at the base of your spine) and symbolizes physical safety, survival, our foundation, relationship with money, childhood and past lives. within your body and what comes up. Do you feel stable within yourself, unpredictable, chaotic, peaceful. Notice the themes coming up and when these themes first presented for you in your life. What are you carrying that is outdated? Journal out what comes up for you during the meditation with no judgement.

Find healthy ways to reconnect to your authentic emotions- This can vary for each person, it may be an intense workout routine, it may be screaming into a pillow in the woods.  As an intuitive healer, I highly recommend a professionally facilitated breathwork session, you can read more about what to expect in a breathwork session & how this healing modality works.  Breathwork healing is a powerful healing modality that accesses your subconscious, transcends the need to speak through your experience, unlike talk therapy and focuses on allowing the emotions to surface and release out of the body. The key to healing is in the awareness and finally release in a safe and facilitated space.

Work with the lunar cycles-  Full moons are powerful times to reflect, process and intentionally release what is no longer serving you.  Set your calendar for the next full moon, and pick a root chakra guided mediation to put on before you go to sleep.

Audit your numbers aka “how you escape” your present moment-  If you resonate with having a blocked root chakra, most likely you have developed a “number” to help you avoid feeling your emotions.  There is ZERO judgment here- whether drugs, alcohol, or maybe even something that on paper can look good- like obsession with your career or work.  Be honest with yourself about what emotions you are avoiding feeling when you reach for that bottle of wine, vape pen or that extra hour in the office.  Challenge yourself to FEEL on your own, naturally. The next time you reach for your escape, challenge yourself to sit and feel your emotions. Notice what comes up for you.

Lean into your discomfort.  Techniques like breathwork, somatic stretching and meditation can help release the emotional charge associated with past experiences.  This is where I get the eye roll or reason “why its not a good time now” from my clients.  This is what you most likely have spent 20+ years building up addressing pains from your past in your mind as “too much to handle”.  Our bodies, take our trauma and push it deep down into our actual physical bodies.  After a one hour healing session, the feedback I typically receive, is “I truly wish I had started to do this work sooner, I carried this for too long.”  No one can do this work for you, trust your timing, you will know when you are ready to heal.

Start small, and set a healing intention.  “I want to feel present in my body today”.  Then align your actions within that day to someone who feels present in their body.  Maybe you notice you are able to breathe fully, move slower, enjoy presence in the moments, if you notice you normally are zoned out or “going through the motions”, pick one task you will do with full awareness and feeling all senses.  Celebrate small indicators that you are in tune with your body and that you have met your intentions, even if fleeting, or you default to old patterns.  This will take time, give yourself grace and keep going.

Remember, you deserve to feel safe and secure in your own body.  The benefits of healing your root chakra are limitless- you'll cultivate a sense of stability, allowing you to step into your power, stop living in the past and create the life you were meant to live. As you release past timelines and limiting beliefs, you'll rewrite your story and embrace your future with empowerment.
